Yes you can dye silk and it seems to be one of the easiest fabrics you can dye. It accepts a variety of them with open arms. The key to dyeing silk is to not overheat the water or the dye as too much heat will damage the fibers. To learn all about dyeing silk, just continue reading our article.

The vast majority can be dyed with great results. The most common of these are: Cotton; Linen; Viscose; Denim; Flax; Jute; Ramie; Canvas; A few natural fabrics prefer to be washed by hand and do better when coloured with hand dye. These include the likes of silk, wool, cashmere and mohair.

Even if the jacket is made of a nylon blend, it will usually accept the dye if at least 60 percent of the jacket is made of nylon. Nylon blends are still dyeable as long as the other materials will also accept dye; examples include cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie, and rayon.

All fiber has to be soaked before it can be dyed. Soaking allows the fibers to open up, making it easier to absorb dye. Silk can be hard to wet so the longer you let it soak, the more successful your dyeing will be.

Silk: Silk dyes well, but tends to shrink, pull, and lose its luster in the process… Wool: Wool can handle dye just fine, but you could wind up with excessive shrinking and pilling.

With a stainless steel spoon (or a wooden spoon reserved only for dyeing), move fabric around in water to avoid uneven dyeing. Keep item in dye 5 to 15 minutes, stirring the whole time. Allow fabric to get a little darker than you want it, as it will fade slightly with rinsing and drying.

If your fabric is made out of natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, and wool, most fabric dyes will work. If your fabric is made out of synthetic materials like polyester, spandex, and acrylic, look for a black fabric dye that says “synthetic fibers” on the label. Non-synthetic fabric dyes may not dye fabrics made with synthetic materials.

You cannot dye anything that you have not first washed thoroughly. If it's not washable, it's not dyeable. Weigh your coat, while it is dry, to decide how much water and dye you will need.
