Make sure you sand the walls down to get rid of the shine. Then size the walls. You can water down some paste or you can just buy a small bag of sizing paste from any DIY store.

Silk has a tendency to bubble when papered over especially at the joins. You could at a push, get away with rubbing down with 100grade paper and sizing the walls, then papering. Then again, you might not get away with it. Personally, I wouldn't try to paper it. The walls must be very very good anyway to have had vinyl silk on them in the first place.

Remove any loose and flaking paint and fill where required sanding back to a smooth flat surface once the filler has dried, to improve adhesion for the wall covering I would apply a coat of Zinsser Bullseye 123 to seal the wall. Wallpaper costing circa £100 per roll I would without any doubt cross also line the wall with a 1200 grade lining paper.

Yes all walls should always be painted before wallpapering. Never wallpaper on Bare plaster. Plaster needs sealed then Painted to create a barrier between the new plaster and the paper. When stripping the paper this barrier protects the plater from gauges an scratches.

Back in 2008 if memory serves one cold January i papered a HLS with vinyl wallpaper. Was over silk emulsion. What a mess. Got called back around 10 days later as it had bubbled along hairline cracks that never showed before I started job. Old filler under the silk emulsion had blown to. You could peal the paper off as the paste was still wet.

Clear areas near the walls to be papered. Spread plastic tarpaulins over furniture, counters and floors. Sand the walls with medium-grit sandpaper to rough up the glossy paint so adhesive can stick. Wipe grit away with a damp sponge and let dry.

Just wipe down the wall with water to remove any contamination and then as suggested apply a coat of watered down paste. I normally use ready mixed paste for heavier papers or feature walls. Solvite have a few different ranges that apply to different wall coverings. Slightly more expensive but makes the job easier. Good luck!

Primer creates a barrier between the wall and the paper so that the adhesive doesn’t overly bond with the wall material. An example of this is wallpapering directly onto unprimed drywall. The gypsum material in the drywall overly bonds with the adhesive in the wallpaper, which makes wallpaper incredibly difficult to remove without damaging the wall.

All existing wallpaper should always be removed as detailed on our ' wallpaper stripping ' page. Pay special attention to ensure that all the residue from old adhesive is removed from the surface. People used to wallpaper on top of existing wallpaper but this never gives a very good finish.
